Disabled United
Visitors may wish to take a look at this website which is growing in popularity, www.disabledunited.com.
Supported by the Prince's Trust and Croydon Council, Disabled United was launched in January 2002. We now receive over 12,000 visitors a week, many of whom are from the USA.
Aimed as an interactive meeting place for the disabled community, Disabled United has become a lifeline to many of our members. Please see Testimonials from some of our members below.
Our members meet up on a regular basis throughout the country, and a group holiday has been booked for May to Blackpool.
Our chat room has proved very popular and seems unlike any other online chat room on the internet. Members have created a very strong bond and support system, always being there for each other. If you are feeling down then a visit to the chat room after 8.30pm each evening which seems to really cheer you up. A quiz night is held on Tuesday evenings at 9pm.
Testimonials: This is Angie's Story
I joined Disabled United in January 2002 as a way of talking to people caring or dealing with disability on a daily basis as I do. Kevin joined in May 2002 as a way also of chatting. At the end of May I started to chat regularly with Kevin in the chat room. We seemed to just get along smoothly and conversation was very easy.
After initially talking in the chat room, Kevin mailed me via the Disabled United mailbox system asking me if I would like to email him, this I done and we exchanged emails every day and also continued chatting via the chat room.
Unfortunately about two weeks after Kevin was taken in hospital, his family mailed me to let me know and one day I got the courage to ring the hospital and speak with Kevin. This was quite a shock but also what was to be the start of a good relationship.
We arranged to meet on August 14th 2002, I drove from Norfolk to Bolton, something I had never done before. When we met we seemed to instantly get on well and we went for a drink to the local pub. Not once did Kevin's disability deter me in any way. I knew that any obstacles that came our way we would tackle head on together. Through the months following I have visited Kevin on many occasions and we both enjoy the visits very much. I know that Kevin is very happy with the way things have progressed and this was beyond our wildest dreams. I am now hoping to be moving to Bolton to be nearer to Kevin so we can be together more than we are now and without the distance between us.
I was not expecting to find love like this and I know Kevin wasn't either, but it happened and we are very happy because of meeting through Disabled United.
Testimonials: Sophie's Story
I first wandered onto the website after ending a previous relationship and wanting to look at an alternative way of making new friends. After finding the chat room empty the first couple of tries I eventually found a few chatting. That was mid January, since then I have been a regular visitor to the room and have had a lot of fun in there.
I can honestly say I have made new friends on the site and to someone who has not had much contact with other disabled people since leaving special school over 20 years ago it has been enlightening. The site allows you to place a profile for others to view and then message you, I have had about ten people send me messages and a couple of them are turning out to be true friends.
Disabled United is still in its infancy but to those who use it regularly as a meeting place it is exciting to watch it develop. The users are consulted and work together with the site management so we can all look forward to a growing online community.
