Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living
Introduction
The Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living is an organisation of Disabled People formed by the merger of the Derbyshire Coalition of Disabled People and the Derbyshire Centre for Integrated Living.
The Derbyshire Coalition of Disabled People (DCDP) was the first organisation of its kind to emerge in Britain. It was set up in 1981 - International Year of Disabled People (IYDP), and the same year as formation of the British Council of Organisations of Disabled People and Disabled People's International.
DCDP was formed by disabled people to represent their interests directly. Social understanding of disability was promoted by campaigns, advocacy, and dialogue with public service authorities.
Along with other newly forming organisations of disabled people in Britain and Europe, DCDP looked closely at the Centres for Independent Living which developed during the 1970s in the United States. Influenced by experiences of segregated institutions, many people wanted CILs in the UK to develop on the US model, with the greatest possible independence from the statutory authorities. The Derbyshire Centre for Integrated Living (DCIL) was opened in September 1984. In March 2000 the two organisations merged to become the new DCIL - The Derbyshire Coalition for Inclusive Living.
